Lanark Community Alliance and Mississippi Mills Renew Partnership to Explore Affordable Housing Opportunities

March 31, 2026 (Almonte, ON) — Lanark Community Alliance (LCA) is continuing its partnership with the Municipality of Mississippi Mills to advance affordable housing opportunities and help address growing housing needs in the community.

Mississippi Mills Council has approved a four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with LCA to explore the development of affordable housing on municipally owned land at the southeast corner of Adelaide Street and McDermott Street.

At its core, the agreement reflects a shared commitment to ensuring more people have access to safe, stable, and affordable places to live. As housing pressures continue to grow across Lanark County, partnerships like this are key to supporting seniors, families, and individuals in finding safe and stable housing.

“Affordable housing is about more than buildings—it’s about people, stability, and the ability to belong,” said Robert Eves, CEO, Lanark Community Alliance. “We’re proud to continue working alongside Mississippi Mills to explore opportunities that can make a lasting difference for individuals and families in this community. The Municipality has been highly engaged and proactive, taking important steps to ensure we are ready to move quickly when capital funding opportunities arise.”

Building on Progress

This work builds on a partnership first established in 2022 for the development of affordable housing at 34 Victoria Street. Since that time, the Municipality has moved forward with construction of the new Mississippi Mills Childcare Services facility on a portion of the property.

As the site evolved, the proposed housing location shifted. LCA and the Municipality are now exploring opportunities at Adelaide Street and McDermott Street while continuing to assess funding options and next steps.

Mayor Christa Lowry emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in addressing local housing needs.

“By working with organizations like Lanark Community Alliance, we are making real progress together to address housing challenges in Mississippi Mills,” said Mayor Lowry. “This agreement shows what strong partnerships can achieve, using municipal land in an effective way to create homes for families, while ensuring we are ready as funding opportunities become available.”

While the project remains in the feasibility and planning stage, both organizations are committed to ongoing collaboration and transparency. A zoning amendment meeting is scheduled for April 14 at 6:00 p.m., with additional opportunities for public input to follow as planning progresses.
